41st Season Opening Night: American Originals

IPO celebrates its 41st season Opening Night with an American Originals program, as part of the Southland Arts, Municipalities and Business Alliance’s Made in America Festival. Bernstein’s Candide Overture and Gershwin’s American in Paris pair with Korngold’s Violin Concerto, which draws on melodic movie themes from 1930s-era films scored by the composer. American violin prodigy Simone Porter will dazzle with her energetic and passionate playing of the Concerto. Rounding out the program will be the World Premiere of IPO’s first Composer in Residence piece, written by the 2018 winner of Classical Evolve, IPO’s composer competition, to be held May 8, 2018.

Act II, an Opening Night post-concert event will celebrate the new season with dinner and dancing at Midlothian Country Club, beginning at 7:30PM on October 20.


Chamber Gems: A Musical Journey

This program brings Bulgarian pianist Nadejda Tsanova and Bulgarian trumpeter Peter Makedonski to the IPO stage for Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1. This evening of Chamber Gems will take listeners on a musical journey from England with Elgar’s melodic Serenade to Czechoslovakia with Neruda’s brilliant Concerto in E-flat for solo trumpet to Norway with Grieg’s Holberg Suite, which mixes Romantic drama with folk flair.


Handel's Messiah

On February 9, 2019, IPO performs “out of this world” orchestral music set to spectacular video footage from actual NASA space explorations conceived and developed by astronomer and experimental photographer, Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado, and his team at KV265. Dr. Salgado collaborates with orchestras, composers, and musicians to present films that provoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about the Earth and the Universe.

Mozart’s lighthearted Marriage of Figaro Overture and his majestic “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41 will showcase the orchestra’s depth and breadth of expression and technical expertise.

The 41st season closes with a magical evening of Richard Strauss works. American soprano D’Ana Lombard will delight in Strauss’s gorgeous and lyrical Four Last Songs.  The Rosenkavalier Suite, from Strauss’s most popular opera, and Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss’s tone poem based on a comical German legend, combine with the third and final World Premiere by IPO’s Composer in Residence for a season finale filled with wonder and joy.
