Once again celebrating the very best in American classical music, IPO, together with co-presenter American Music Project in conjunction with their 10th Anniversary, opens its 47th season on September 21st, 2024 at 5:30PM with Three Great American Symphonies. “The Diamond Second is an epic wartime work and, arguably, the great American symphony,” explains Lawrence Johnson of AMP. “I’m delighted that Stilian feels as strongly about this piece as I do and that we will be able to bring this music, as well as the Still and Vincent symphonies, to a local audience.”

Winner of six Jeff Awards, including Best Musical Production, Kokandy Productions’ chilling Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is coming to GSU in time for Halloween, with full orchestral IPO accompaniment. This monumental concert version of Stephen Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece will take place at the Center for Performing Arts on the grounds of Governors State University in University Park, IL

Returning to the podium for the first time since May of 2011, and after 25 years as IPO Music Director, IPO Conductor Laureate Carmon DeLeone will take the IPO baton again in a special, one night only return. Joining him on the program is internationally acclaimed pianist Fei-Fei, winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition and a top finalist at the 14thVan Cliburn International Piano Competition. An in-demand performer both in the US and internationally, Fei-Fei has been praised the world over for her “bountiful gifts and passionate immersion into the music she touches,” according to The Plain Dealer, and her “passion, piquancy and tenderness…winning stage presence,” by the Dallas Morning News.

IPO celebrates John Williams, one of the greatest modern composers of all time in stunning fashion. Highlighted by the intergalactically famous Star Wars Suite, the program also features his wildly charismatic Centennial Overture along with the intimate Concerto for Viola and Orchestra.

A highlight to the evening is the return of Matthew Lipman to IPO’s stage. Originally from Crete, IL, Lipman has matured into a world-renowned violist performing across the globe. Most notably, last year Lipman performed chamber music by André Previn with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter at Carnegie Hall, and on tour at the Berlin Philharmonie, Frankfurt Alte Oper, and the Vienna Musikverein. Praised by the New York Times for his “rich tone and elegant phrasing,” and the Chicago Tribune for a “splendid technique and musical sensitivity,” Lipman learned his craft under the tutelage of IPO’s late Principal Violist Matthew Mantell and was an early member of the South Suburban Youth Orchestra.

IPO Principal clarinetist Trevor O’Riordan steps into the spotlight for this clarinet fueled performance. The evening begins with a culmination of IPO’s previous seasons’ Classical Evolve and Earshot emerging composer initiatives, then moves on to two of the classical world’s most famous composers—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert.

Ozinga Chapel’s towering, 46-rank pipe organ comes alive as IPO lowers the curtain on its 47th season. Possessing nearly unparalleled technical facility, a brilliant ear for tonal color, and innovative programming style, Peter Richard Conte is one of the most admired orchestral organists of this era. Appointed in 1989 as the fourth Wanamaker Grand Court Organist, Conte presides over the world’s largest fully functioning musical instrument (29,000 pipes) at Macy’s Center City in downtown Philadelphia. The epic evening concert will also feature 2023/24 IPO Composer-in-Residence Oswald Huỳnh’s third commission for IPO.
